I find Raymond Carver's hint of taping three-by-five cards to the wall beside one's desk very useful. Moreover, the three quotes he mentions in his essay On Writing, also reflect the concerns of the translator:

"Fundamental accuracy of statement is the one sole morality of writing."

"...and suddenly everything became clear to him."
- from a story by Chekov.
